Ashford House stands on the northern side of its own valley, a mile from the nearest village and ten minutes from Stow-on-the-Wold. It is close enough to the Cotswolds you have heard of to see them before lunch, and far enough from them to hear nothing at night but the ridge.

Getting here

Check-in from three, though the drawing room and a pot of tea are yours from midday.

  • By car

    Two hours from West London on the A40, ninety minutes from Birmingham, an hour from Oxford. The last mile is a single-track lane; take it slowly. Parking is on the gravel court and unattended.

  • By rail

    Kingham is twenty minutes away and ninety from London Paddington. Moreton-in-Marsh is twenty-five minutes. We will collect you from either station with a little notice — please just ask.

  • By air

    Birmingham is an hour and twenty, Heathrow two hours, Bristol ninety minutes. A car and driver can be arranged for any of them, and is charged at cost.

Nearby

Villages worth the detour.

Stow-on-the-Wold is ten minutes and best in the early evening. Bourton-on-the-Water is pretty and busy; go before nine or not at all. Kingham, fifteen minutes, has the better pub and the station. Chipping Norton, half an hour, has the bookshop.

Daylesford is twenty minutes for those who want it. The village below the house has a church with a Norman door, a post box, and nothing else — which is, for many guests, the point.

    Jacobean and gloriously unrestored — the National Trust has largely left it alone.

    Baroque on a scale the Cotswolds otherwise avoids. Go for the park as much as the house.

    Two great gardens facing one another across a lane. Allow the whole afternoon.

    Mughal domes in a Gloucestershire valley, and the reason Brighton Pavilion exists.
